Software Update - Code signing, building name changes & more

Code signing certificate

Tropic Euro is now signed with a certificate from Comodo CA Limited for improved security and compatibility. This also fixes potential security warning errors in some versions of Java. The certificate is granted to Inner Version Ltd, the company which publishes Tropic Euro.

Building name changes

The names of several buildings have been changed to make them simpler and easier to understand for new users, including omitting "small" from the left column of buildings and renaming cocoa "plant" to cocoa "dryer" to avoid potential confusion with the concept of plantations:

  • Small Cocoa Plant -> Cocoa Dryer
  • Cocoa Plant -> Large Cocoa Dryer
  • Small Sugar Mill -> Sugar Mill
  • Sugar Mill -> Large Sugar Mill
  • Small Market -> Market
  • Small Warehouse -> Warehouse

These simplifications are also in anticipation of the upcoming guided tutorial, where the aim is to make the interface as easy as possible to learn for new users.

Music player auto-starts on login

The built-in music player automatically starts playing once logged in, until the stop or pause icon is clicked at the bottom-left of the main window. The music player was initially designed to be as unobtrusive as possible, so much so that a significant proportion of users may not have even realised it was there. However, to prevent the feature becoming an irritation, the functionality of the music player is such that once stopped or paused, the auto-start feature is then turned off for all future logins.

Colours swapped for island owner boxes for user vs other human users

Previously a blue background was used in the island owner box for the local user, and purple for islands controlled by other human users. This has now been swapped, as the more logical arrangement is the other way around - purple is normally considered a "special" colour in a lot of cultures around the world (e.g. associated with royalty, wealth, privilege, etc). It might help to think about a 5 player game, with say 1 blue and 4 purple island owner boxes vs 1 purple and 4 blue - the latter arrangement is slightly clearer about which island the user controls.

Issues fixed:
  • Previously a malicious user could bypass the time violation feature in ranked games by repeatedly doing a reversible command, such as moving tools to/from a plantation or requesting/cancelling a wharf. This has been fixed by only updating the waiting start point when the user becomes the active role applier, so the time limit for e.g. the equipper phase essentially is for the duration of the entire role phase for that particular player.

Under the hood:
  • This update includes several performance tweaks for both the client and server, including substantially faster AI calculations.

random population of buildings seems to not function. we started several games both in multi- and single- player mode, but the field of buildings was empty. Neither could we pick buildings (as in custom population mode).

Fixed, apologies about that.
